Dear Broke Blog,

Right now I am $8 short for my rent and it's due Wednesday. I had to borrow $20 from Carina (I originally thought I was $20 short) so she transferred it and it should be in my account tomorrow. That means that I'll be $8 in debt by Wednesday once I give Carina the extra $12 back. There are three factors contributing to my brokeness:

1) The Air Force is slow despite our fast planes. Money=slow, planes=fast. Not only do they owe me my monthly paycheck, they still owe me $250 in book refunds AND $108 that they didn't pay me last year. I was hoping that atleast ONE of these would have showed up in my account by now. They haven't.

2) I still have a bunch of money stored in the Financial Aid office but I would really feel retarded walking in there and asking for $8. I wouldn't want to ask for more because I want to keep that money where I can't touch it until I really need it.

3) Paul is a complete asshole. He owes me $150 that I lent him when his car got towed. I had DEMANDED that he put the money to pay me back in the mail THE NEXT DAY. I called him and he just sent it today (over a week later). I would go on, but the things I would say would not be fair to say about someone on a public website. Needless to say, he is completely disowned. I just don't put up with this shit, especially from ex-boyfriends.

So I will be living on ramen for the first time since I got here. Luckily I have 15 pounds of rice remaining, some chicken in the freezer, and a pork chop or two. If I space it all out, it won't be all that bad. Until then though, I have about $1.60, plus my quarters for laundry. This is not a cry for money family, sometimes I like living the broke life, especially after reading The Broke Diaries. That way I get to write fun entries like this talking about how broke I am.

Side note: Today, waiting for the T, there were two Asian people, completely unrelated, SPITTING continuously. It was a young guy and a middle-aged woman and it was DISGUSTING. The guy actually had a PUDDLE forming at his feet. It's been a long time since I was so blatant about shooting dirty looks. Okay, that's not true, but these looks were still very dirty. Ugh, so gross.

For those of you "non-military" people who don't know what a Navigator is, let me enlighten you with my vast knowledge. They are um.... people.... who navigate.... things. There's a bunch of...stuff they use to...navigate. Okay so I have no idea. When you read yesterday's blog keep in mind I have absolutely no idea what this job entails, just that I would be good at it.

Well the votes are in, and I'm not counting. I think the Blog Gods smiled down upon me because they realized I was running out of "A" material and blessed me with my meeting with my Captain.

Disclaimer: My Captain is an awesome guy despite the fact that a lot of people are scared of him. In fact, I like him even more than the Colonel. Today's meeting was a term interview, meaning I had to be there, the Captain didn't call me in just to tell me I'm fat and stupid.

So I'm talking to my captain and we inevitably get to weight standards. So far the meeting had been going great because Captain had nothing to say about my grades other than "best of luck getting your 3.0." So far, I'm not stupid. Oh, but here comes the fat. He asks how I've done with weight. I say I've always been 5 pounds within my max. So with the best intentions he gives me some advice. Here is the general rundown:

"Well Cadet Janson, sometimes when cadets have a couple of extra pounds you just have to work harder at presenting the military image. Look meaner, stand straighter. This will make up for the fact that you're chubby. I mean you're not chubby, but you know what I mean. Gorgeous people tend to look better than fat people, that's just how it is. The military is no different. Something I strongly suggest is taking a good strong look in the mirror every day for a few minutes to think about how fat you are. This will help you be not fat."

Though I added some of my humor, he honest to god mentioned the military image and to my dismay, the mirror suggestion. Never in my life have I come so close to laughing at a cadre member. I was literally biting my tongue and SHAKING with laughter. Thank GOD he was doing paperwork and didn't notice.

However, joke is on him. I have the magical mirror. The more I stare at it, the more gorgeous I look. So I'll give you your few minutes a day Captain, gladly.

In addition to the hilarity of my day, I received my scores for my Air Force Officer Qualifying Test. I did Average in Verbal, and above average in Quantitative and General Knowledge or whatever. The funny part is, not only did I NAIL the pilot part of the test, I ALMOST HAD A PERFECT SCORE FOR NAVIGATOR. My score was a 93 out of 100. That's almost unheard of. People who actually want to be navigators are asking me to trade scores. To tell you the truth, I wouldn't mind sitting in the back seat of a fighter jet for four years. It all depends on how much more time I would have to put in, which I think is a lot more. So I sucked at what I like and nailed what I could have cared less about. Damn this program.

There's so many things I want to talk about, I just have absolutely no energy anymore. So what do you most want to hear about:

-The stupid people in my discussions (Amusing stories)
-The idiots writing for our college newspaper (Bitchy rants)
-My official Physical Fitness Test, Weigh-in & other ROTC adventures (Colonel jokes)

Bent's Five Questions (about freaking time I get some questions!):

1. When you're fifty years old, what do you think you will look back on as your greatest accomplishment?

Whatever it is that makes me immortal (aka writing a great script). Holy crap this question is hard- considering that my standard of "accomplishment" is probably higher than 99% of the population. Like you would think "saving someone's life" or "having a good job, loving husband, and fabulous children" would be considerations, but no, if I can do something (good) that will be remembered forever, I'll be happy. Well I'll be happier...I'm always happy. I'm stopping now.

2. If I come back and get an apartment across the street from you, can we set up a tin can telephone? If not, what juvenile mode of communication will we use besides phone and IM?

If you move into the awesome apartment complex across the street, we can easily set up tin cans. However, as has been proven by every single person living in that building, we would be able to hear each other just fine by yelling out our windows.

3. I asked Shelby, and I'm asking you: What show should I direct in the spring?

A show with me because I want to direct too. A Shakespearian comedy brought to new and astounding heights in honor of Willow and Mandie? Think about it. I'll have my people call your cat.

4. Living with Carina? Seriously, what were you two thinking? How's that going?

Seriously, and I'm not being overdramatic, FIVE different people have asked if we've killed each other yet. Contrary to popular belief (and I have no idea where this belief came from because we've never fought and were attached at the hip all spring break), we get along fine. Not to mention she's gone by 7am and I usually don't get home until 10pm when she's already in bed. You can't fight with someone you don't see.

5. So, when you're in the armed forces after graduation, can I call you for a surgical strike sometime? If so, can it be on Carrot Top's raggedy-ass face?

Actually, it's funny you mention that. I was just talking to the current wing commander and he is the only cadet from the program that is going to be stationed overseas (England) because he's going to be a munitions officer. What this means is that you're in charge of big buildings full of deadly weapons. Living in England + Being in charge of bombs = Perfect job for Julie. So yes Jeremy, I would be more than happy to bomb the HELL out of Carrot Top.....and Madagascar. Damn that country.

THE RULES!
1 -- Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 -- I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 -- You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 -- You'll include this explanation.
5 -- You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed

"The Solar System" Lab #2

This lab is so hilarious that I think I may begin looking forward to it. We played Jeopardy today because we did the entire lab last week and they give us two weeks to do each lab. Seriously, one hour of Jeopardy. My class has slightly improved in their level of intelligence but there were still a few choice moments.

Remember Commander PN? (Commander of playing nice?) He was on my team. At one point the TF didn't give the other team enough points for their correct answer, so I corrected him. Apparently Commander PN has experienced a change in regime because he whips around, glares at me, and says "Who's team are you on anyway?" Now if he had been joking around, that would have been one thing. This kid was pissed off. Might I add that he got every single on of his questions wrong and that winning Jeopardy would not result in ANY sort of reward. I nicely snap back that it's simple math and someone was going to catch onto it. Dear god, I think, I just reduced myself to his level. I proceed to win Jeopardy for the team just to shut him up, and sweetly coax the TF to give us some sort of reward. I think we're all going to have a little extra something on our next grade. Hey, if I'm going to be stuck in this 5th grade learning environment, I'm going to play like a 5th grader.

Also on my team is the Girl Who Is Too Cool To Be Playing Jeopardy. EVERY SINGLE TURN she dramatically stands up, crosses her arms, and doesn't make any move to answer the question. Once her turn is over she mutters how pointless this is and how she's not learning anything. This happens EVERY SINGLE TURN. I was dying.

Our TF also decided to throw in random 80's television trivia. God do I wish I had had Bent around. I knew the Alf questions but I am sad to say I know nothing about 21 Jump Street, The A Team, and Mr. (insert name I can't spell). Sorry Jer, I know I have disappointed you greatly. I'll sacrifice a goat or a box of Annie's later to make it up to you.

So since this entry isn't as funny as I had hoped, I'm going to make it up by being a bitch. I've run into one too many people lately whose political "views" flat out piss me off. So if you are going to talk politics with me, here are three simple rules to follow so that I will neither lose all respect for you or want to slash your throat with a butter knife:

1) Be original. The fact that you can regurgitate a couple of facts from some old has been's book or newpaper article that you read does not impress me. Regurgitation does not equal intelligence, it equals being unoriginal and boring. If I cared about what you were saying, I could just pick up the damn book or newspaper. More often that not, all people like this have to say are comments on the one-sided BS they pick up. You're allowed to disagree with what people write! Form your own opinions!

2) Don't be a hypocrite. Falling victim to the type of person in part one will inevitably lead you to this. Don't bash someone for having a certain opinion then state the same opinion with "your new intellectual twist."

3) Again, don't be a hypocrite. Don't bash people for characteristics that you exemplify. God dammit that pisses me off.

Speaking of being pissed off, this entry is going to piss some people off. I don't care. If you have a problem with it, don't read my blog.

Have a nice day!

Okay I hardly ever post links...in fact I don't think I ever have because it's a cheap excuse for blogging (You heard me!) but this is effing cool/hilarious. Make sure you watch the whole thing.

So anyway, Beckie and I waged war on Michael Jackson yesterday. Oh you wish you were in our Literature and the Art of Film class. There's a handful of high school seniors in this class from BU Academy and let me tell you, our discussion section got the pick of the litter. They are all the stereotypical rejects that we're taught not to make fun of but do anyway. There's the kid who looks like he's 10, there's Lurch, there's mousy with glasses, and then... there's Michael Jackson. This kid is what MJ would have looked like in high school if he had looked like a freak his entire life. Plus the voice is indentical if you take away the foreign accent. (Which also puts him in the stereotypical dork category.) Beckie and I are a little scared of MJ2. When he crosses his legs it looks like there's no bones supporting these things. His hands are like spiders. He reminds us of Michael Jackson. *shudder*

So anyway we're in class discussing "The Battleship Potemkin" and MJ2 claims that the abundance of close-ups in the beginning and severe lack of them at the end is not symbolic, just necessary. For those of you not familiar with this historical event it's about a small group of sailors who revolted and eventually led to the revolt of an entire city. It starts with one man. It ends with the unification of the masses. NOOOOO there's no symbolism in the fact that close-ups disappear by the end of the movie! Surely not! WRONG! Since my discussion section is not only full of freaks, it's full of mutes too, Beckie and I decide to take on MJ2 ourselves. He turns out to be ridiculously stubborn, and Beckie and I have to take him down one scene at a time. The TF is completely on our side but is too afraid to tell the kid he's wrong because he's one of the only people speaking and she's short on material. Finally MJ2 states: "Okay you guys are right." VICTORY IS OURS! Take THAT MJ2! Take your noodle legs elsewhere!

So the end of this story was anticlimatic. But that wasn't really the point. The main focus is the freaks in my class. So there you are. Short sentences are cool.

Once again I steal from Lee:

"Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer

KUH-razy huh?

Anyway, this weekend rocked my pants off. Mom came down Friday and fun and good food ensued. We went to Brown Sugar Friday night and absolutely gorged on wonderful food and wine. Saturday we had a huge breakfast and then went to see Once Upon a Time in Mexico for our monthly Johnny Depp fix. What a weird movie. Then we did a little shopping, played around at Super 88 (mom loved that place), and went home to cook dinner. My cousin from Georgia and his girlfriend came over (they are both freshmen at BU now) and we all had good food and conversation for a few hours. Sunday was Spike's, the Aquarium, Legal Seafood, and Tito's Cantina with the cast of Angels. In other words, mom and I were stuffed and fat by the end of the weekend. (Sorry Colonel.) The aquarium of course rocked but to my utter dismay the sharks are gone for a month because they are vulnerable to the chemicals being used to clean the large tank. However, I have a membership now so I can go whenever I want!!! I CAN LOOK AT SHARKS WHENEVER I WANT NOW JEREMY! AND I'M GOING TO VIDEOTAPE THEM JUST FOR YOU!!!!

So then mom went home and DID MY LAUNDRY while I was at my read-through. I LOVE YOU MOM! Monday I skipped PT and we slept in (Zing again Colonel!), watched Brian's Song, and held back tears as I went off to class and we said goodbye. Oh yes, we also watched Key Largo at some point.

So my mom rocks and so did the weekend and that's why you haven't heard from me.

I received my first Air Force paycheck of the year which = awesome.
Then I received my first internet/cable bill of the year which = not so awesome.
Luckily the Air Force check doubled the bill so I have gone from $16 to much more because of the Air Force and Mom. I'm not rich or anything but now I will actually be able to afford my Angels script when it comes in and a T pass for when it gets cold. w00t!

BWAH HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA!

Oh, my god, I am so glad that Lab let out early so that I can tell you this story while it is still fresh in my head.

AS101 "The Solar System" Lab met today for the first time and it was effing retarded. We all had to stand around an orrery that looks like it was made somewhere in the 13th century area and talk about which planets were bigger and when. D'oh!
But the best part by far was the sheer idiocy of the other kids in my class.

Now being the avid student that I am this semester I had read all of the material before the Lab met. At the start of class we're go over the material quickly and the TF actually takes the time to go over the order of the planets, having each person take a planet. I am saying to myself that this is the biggest waste of time ever but THREE PEOPLE got their planet wrong! MARS is the fourth planet! SATURN comes after Jupiter! NEPTUNE does exist!

But I give them some slack, bite my tongue, and get ready for circle time around the orrery. As we're going through the answers for the Lab manuel I realize how ridiculously easy they are and decide that we can easily get out of here 30 minutes early. However, the TF decided to go around the circle to have everybody answer the same number of questions. People keep getting them wrong. JUPITER is the biggest freaking planet! MERCURY moves the fastest around the sun! MY GOD! So I decide to give my special needs classmates a hand and start saying the answers no matter whose turn it is. Yes, I'm being a bitch, but I learned this shit in second grade and could really use a coffee. I have class again at 1, let's move!

So things are moving nicely now that I'm in charge and suddenly some kid turns around and says: "It's not your turn."
.....Excuse me?
It's not my turn?! Who the hell is this kid? Overseer of the Uniform Code of Taking Turns? Is he the Commander of Playing Nice? Well Commander PN, I would like to speak with your supervisor. I'm doing this class a favor! Your Hall Monitor antics will not work here! The nerve!

So I smile and answer the next question. That'll show him. Class gets out 30 minutes early. That's a victory for all of the Anti-Taking Turns, Pro Getting the Hell Out of Stupid Lab Rebels. REVOLUTION!

Okay so now that I have that out of my system I have to go to my Solar System lecture. I hope I don't see Commander PN. I might get slapped with a detention or frowny face sticker or something.

Happy with coffee,
Jules

PS I got Hannah in Angels! w00t!

Reasons why I rule:

1) I went to PT today. Seriously. I'm not kidding. Also, I plan on going Friday. I'm serious.
2) I had fun at PT.
3) I was given a really big honor by being selected as one of five people to carry out the Wingman program (a program that matches "veterans" up with new cadets who didn't attend FOP to catch them up on ROTC) that has JUST been handed down to the sophomores so there's a lot riding on our success. How Stupid and Fat got picked for this, I don't know. Someone on the Wing Staff must like me.
4) My job this semester is Recruiting Assistant. That means I get to wear a flight suit to recruiting events. If that isn't effing cool I don't know what is.
5) I kicked some serious ass at auditions. Especially for Angels.
6) Not only did I beat Tom, I beat Paul at fantasy football.
7) I kicked a virus's ass today all by myself.
8) I got added in to the class that was overly full. On the first day:

Teacher: "From 254 to 285AD 52 people were Emperor of Rome."
Teacher's Book (that he wrote): "From 239 to 284 26 people were emperor of Rome."

I e-mailed him about this and he commended me on how closely I paid attention. Boo-ya.

9) I gave an announcement for AAS at LLAB and was commended by my commander for it. Guess I don't suck at all three things huh Colonel? Huh? HUH!?!?! Yeahhhh, you like that don't ya?
10-1000) Insert other reasons here.

What an awesome day.

(Okay this was a completely "pat myself on the back" entry, which I hate. But eff it, I rule.)

Dear Broke Blog,

I am reading "The Broke Diaries" by Angela Nissel upon the recommendation of my mom and I have to say, my mom was soooo right about this book being absolutely HI-sterical. At first it was just something to read because though amusing, I wasn't going to use any of this girl's helpful tips because she was desperately broke and I wasn't doing too bad. However, now I find myself "hi-liting" things to keep in mind because I am FLAT BROKE. For example, did you ever think of sending mail with no stamp by putting your address as the addressee and putting the real addressee as the return address? I sure as hell hadn't! So don't be surprised if it happens. I have $10.11 in my bank account and Carina just gave me $25 for her half of the router, that was a life-saver. Plus tomorrow there is a BBQ at the Det so, free dinner. Today at the book store I had to return my Oceanography book and buy TWO books for my Medieval History class. When I saw the size of the books, I panicked. "Okay, I have $78.15 in my hand from the Oceanography book, I have $10.11 in my bank account, I have $5 in cash in my day planner and I have some random nickles and pennies in my change purse. Please Gods of Anti-humiliation, let these two books be under whatever amount I have so that I don't have to tell the cashier to put one of the books back. And if you're really feeling generous, let me pay just in cash so I don't have to do part in cash and then $5 of debit card. Please." The books came to $78.95. WOOOOHOOOOOOO! The girl looked at me weird when I triumphantly put the $78.00 I was clutching in my hand on the counter and practically sang that I just had to get the extra dollar out of my backback. PLUS I discovered that I in fact had SIX DOLLARS in my day planner so I now have enough money to eat today! THANK YOU ANTI-HUMILIATION PLUS ANTI-STARVATION GODS! Then, for dinner, Beckie let me use her convenience points to buy soup! Could this day get any better!?!? However this was all before I decided not to audition tonight, thus allowing me to return to my apartment stocked with food. Oh well.

Another plus of the day: I beat my mom's boss at Fantasy Football by OVER 50 POINTS. Yeah, that's you Tom. I hope my mom sends you this link so you can see that I've posted this for the world to see. MWAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Happily not-so-broke anymore,
Jules

Monday, September 08, 2003

AHHH AH AHHH AH AHHH (aka inspirational music) I HAVE INTERNET!!!!! MWAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! However, I have it with a non-wireless router. It was $30 cheaper plus the guy at RadioShack told me that a lot of people have trouble with wireless routers. Now if Dorky Computer Man had been trying to sell me the more expensive item because the other one wasn't so hot I would have been suspicious. However he saved me cash, which makes him a nice Dorky. However there are lots of wires around the apartment now. If anyone cares to give me a passionate speech about why wireless it better, shoot.

So The Best of Combat was AWESOME! I got to direct the only non-Slow Kids show: The Slime That Binds. I had a kick ass cast starring John Longino along with my superawesome script as well. It was my directorial debut but if you had seen the show you wouldn't have thought I did much directing. At some point during the day (dress rehearsal) my cast decided that it was much funnier to only use about half of their lines and improv the rest. Since the people who watched the dress rehearsal were rolling in the floors with laughter, I told my cast to relax for the next three hours for learning lines was now optional. They pretty much took me up on it and though the performance wasn't as funny, we still got a ton of laughs and a huge score from the not-so-celebrity judges. When people congratulated me afterwards, I laughed. The alumni won in the end because it came down to audience vote. Although we had more votes, the alumni supporters were much louder. I'm sure there are alumi reading this that have ten million more questions so send 'em on over.

So I had my meeting with the Colonel today. It was basically a pep talk. I'll sum it up for you: "Cadet Janson, to succeed in this program you need to have good grades, good physical fitness, and good leadership qualities. So far you suck at two of these three things. Now I know you are a smart person with a great personality for this so I want to see you really step up this year by not being stupid or fat. We're always here if you need us. PS Don't be fat." The Colonel is the man.

On the other hand I have my magical mirror that I bought for $5 at Walmart that tells me I look like a supermodel. Carina finally got a new mirror because she said we were disillusioning ourselves. I brought the mirror into my room. I love you magical mirror.

Friday, September 05, 2003

Et hem.... "If you would like to take part in the interview craze, leave me 5 questions in my comment section and I will answer them." Okay then, let's move on.

So yeah, dropping Oceanography. There is an optional additonal screening of the movies we will be watching in my Literature and the Art of Film class that conflicts with Oceanography so since the Lit and Film class sounds like it's going to be about EIGHT MILLION TIMES cooler, it won. I am now looking into transferring into a history class due to the recommendation of the great Ryan Travers.

So you know that PFT I mentioned? I failed the run by 2 fucking seconds. Plus I had an anal person counting my push-ups so she made about half of them not count. Though she was doing me a favor in the long run, I'm still bitter that I suck so I would rather blame it on her anal counting. So I have PT 3 times a week. If my class schedule wasn't so delightful (my earliest class MWF is 1pm) this would be grounds for suicide. Icing on the cake is that the Colonel decided to single me out and wants me to come in for a meeting about my "physical condition." If he wasn't the Colonel, my response: "Dude, I nailed the PFT last year and you guys kind of sprung this on us. The week before to prepare is crucial but since this stupid thing was so soon I spent the week pulling every muscle I have by moving in instead of working on my run time. So what? I had a bad PFT, it's not like this is usual behavior. Plus, it's not like I failed everything, I did decent in the other events, and in case you didn't notice I FAILED BY TWO SECONDS!" Since he is the Colonel: "Yes Sir." This is the one part of the military that I really am having a hard time dealing with. That and remembering that I can't swear at the stupid drivers of Boston for meanly beeping at me for stupid reasons when I'm in uniform.

By the way, my apartment is cool. My room is the best room ever. Better than any room you will ever have. So there.

Thursday, September 04, 2003

"IT'S OVER!" Carina and I are officially moved in to our apartment that is better than yours. We worked our asses off all day Monday and were pretty much finished by the end of the day. We will be having cable and internet installed on Saturday so that I can once again be in touch with people daily. So far my classes have been cool. The Solar System seems like it's going to be hilariously easy but Oceanography might be a bitch so they can cancel each other out. My Oceanography teacher is pretty cool though, he's a dick, but a dick that loves his work and seems like a reasonable man, which is the kind of teacher I like. However, if either of my two remaining classes seems like it's also going to be a bitch as well then I'm going to look for another class because I can't let my pride of taking ridiculously hard classes get in the way of the fact that I need to pull off some pretty high grades this year.

So though the move-in was way easier than most people make it sound, the year has taken off so fast that your head could spin. ROTC decided to have Lead Lab on the first day of classes, something that I had not been aware of since I haven't been next to a computer since Saturday. When I walked out of my second class at 3 I saw my friend Tom in uniform and thought "well, shit." He laughed that my uniform of the day was a leather vest and jeans. I hauled ass for the 25 minutes back to the apartment, ran around like a mad woman getting my uniform together, and then almost had a minor heart attack because I couldn't find my name tag but thought "screw it" because I had to be on the other side of campus by 3:50. Luckily someone was on my side because my name tag was in my shoe, I caught the T just as it was pulling into the stop, and the guy let me ride for free since I had no money. I made it with 15 minutes to spare, and walked in looking like I had known exactly what was going on. Suckers.

But here's the best freaking news yet. The Physical Fitness Test, which usually doesn't happen until about 3 weeks into the semester, is TOMORROW! They think they are doing a favor to the people who are contracting but little do they know that those people are now panicking because the extra week to lose an extra couple of pounds and squeeze out another couple of push-ups is FUCKING CRUCIAL. I don't know how good my chances are of getting the 350 score I need to only have to go to PT once a week is either. Argh. The funny part is that I have 3-5 people sleeping at my house tonight so that they only have the 3 minute walk to PT in the morning. PT Party!

So suddenly it's LLAB Wednesday, PFT Friday, Stage Troupe meeting Sunday, Arnold Air Society meeting Sunday, auditions Mon-Wed. AAAAH!!!

Alright so this wasn't nearly as interesting as I had planned on making it but trying to get all of this information in one blog calls for precision story-telling.
